An Angry Mother vs. Fall Out Boy

Well this is surely an interesting story; an angry mother has written an email to Island Def Jam Records about the band, Fall Out Boy, after her daughters went to see the group in concert this past Tuesday. The mother wrote about the bands bassist Pete Wentz’s personal political testimony onstage complaining that the ticket said that the show was for all ages but the band was very foul-mouthed and anti-morals. This all took place in Charlotte, North Carolina where the mother claimed was not like liberal San Francisco and other cities across the north and west that were demoralized. She said that this was a concert and not some liberal homosexual rally.
Oddly enough this all goes back to a communication theory called Speech Code Theory which talks about how in a certain community there are different speech codes that are used. This means that when Fall Out Boy played in this city, there speech and how they viewed things were different than the people in this community and obviously this mother had a problem with their views.
The mother promised to contact national news organizations (I bet this story will be covered on Fox News for sure) and other venues where Fall Out Boy will be playing. The mother claims that the band will lose a lot of financial support because of their views. Yea I am sure look at Green Day! They are all for same sex marriages and standing up for what you believe in. This will not make Fall Out Boy less popular but actually make them more popular. The mother concluded her email by saying that the bands responsibility was to sing songs and when they opened their mouth to talk, they blew it. She continues to say that her children will not be a part of the bands sick idea of family.
The problem here is that this woman is really biased and can’t look outside the box. She feels that her way of life is right and if anyone else tries to alter her way of thinking, they are automatically wrong. I think this woman’s closed-mindedness is a big problem in today’s world. We see things one way and never look at them in a different light. I never understood what makes Homosexuality such a bad thing in a lot of people’s minds. It’s not hurting anyone and who is to say who can love who?
Wentz posted a letter on the bands website which addressed the issues that this anger mother claimed she had with him. And while Wentz explained the entire story, the bravest thing he said was the following: the only thing we consider unacceptable is for you to engage in sexist, racist or homophobic behavior. And if you do, we don’t want you as a fan. For Wentz to say something like this I have to give him credit. I think he did a great job of standing up for what he believes in and I think while maybe the band will lose a few fans who aren’t open minded about those issues, the band will gain more fans because of it. I also think Fall Out Boy will be viewed as a band that stands up for their beliefs which is something most can’t do nowadays.
While Wentz did offer an apology for the profanity that he used at the concert, he did not apologize for speaking his mind. Wentz ended the letter by saying "I encourage fans of our band to grow up to become good people and to change the world. Unfortunately, I don't believe that treating other people as inhuman is acceptable. Our show is not a liberal homosexual rally, but at the same time, it will never be a Ku Klux Klan rally."
I must say because of this story, I have a new found respect for the band Fall Out Boy and I think its great that they stand up for what they believe in. It’s a very cool thing to do and I applaud Wentz for not backing down.
