Males aged 11-16 are the most likely to use solvents ( Glue, deoderants, hairspray, paint ) to get a quick buzz. The problem with this is that it is one of the most dangerous drugs to take, it can kill you instantly and it can kill you on your first time, it doesn't take years of taking it to kill you.
Most solvent abusers abuse because it is cheap and gives an instant kick of feeling giddy and drunk. You can tell if someone has been solvent abusing if they have a dazed appearance, unsteadiness, slurred speech and unpredictable behaviour.
Solvent abusers most commonly use glue put into a plastic bag which cover their face and they inhale the fumes from the glue. Regular abusers can get 'sniffer's rash', conjunctivitis, liver, heart and kidney damage and in extreme cases, brain damage. Lots of teenagers trying it for the first time have died straight away because of the solvent freezing the back of their throat and stopping them breathe, it's really not the nicest way to die. One death in 70 a year are because of solvent abuse and it must be stopped, abusers never know the true facts about it before trying it, it
is dangerous and
can kill anyone.
There is currently no law preventing teenagers from getting hold of all solvents, only the most commonly abused substances have been made so you have to be eighteen or over to buy them. Although it is an offense for a shop to sell any known abuser solvent products. If you are or know a solvent abuser please contact the National Helpline on (0808 800 2345) before you push your luck too far and that sniff at a party may be your last.
