Moving isn’t fun for most teenagers…especially when they’re moving to a new school district. If your parents are in the process of moving, you may be feeling angry, resentful or depressed. And while these feelings are normal, they are also treatable. It may sound crazy, but there are ways to see the advantages of your upcoming move, and to make peace with this life change. Here are some ways to feel better:
- Think about your fabulous new room. Few things are more fun than getting to design and personalize your new room. Convince your parents to let you pick out a few new things for your new space, and you’ll make it into your haven for whenever you need to escape your new life. Ask your parents to let you help interview different moving services, so you’ll feel comfortable knowing that the movers they’ve chosen won’t break your TV or expensive stereo when they put it in your new room.
- Think about reinventing yourself. If you think of yourself as ‘uncool’, moving is a great way to reinvent yourself as a popular kid in your new town. Practice your ‘new’ personality on your interstate movers or even on your local moving help, so that you’ll be able to determine what’s cool and what’s still not.
- Consider it an adventure. It may stink now to be forced to move, but you’ll be surprised at how exciting it will make you seem when you’re older. People who move around in their teenage years always have exciting stories to tell and have a wider frame of reference than those who have stayed put their whole lives. And you’ll get to add lots of new stories to your repertoire!
- Use it as a bonding experience. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of your move as much as possible. Let you friends take you out to dinner to celebrate your move, or let them help you pack up your stuff, which will create some really awesome memories.
- Milk it. While it’s a bit cruel to take advantage of your parents because they’ve upset you with the move, you’ll definitely feel better if they cut you some slack during the process – and chances are, they’ll be happy to do so. Ask for a bigger allowance to accommodate your new needs in your new home, or request a new MP3 player for the trip to your new area. You never know exactly what it is that will make you feel better!
