There are some films so disturbing you shouldn’t watch them alone. Some are scary, some are horribly depressing and some just require the comfort of another individual nearby to help you keep it together.

Schindler’s List

The most telling tale of the Holocaust to date, Schindler’s list is truly horrifying, but not in the cheesy horror film way. This movie is real, much too real, and it will make you feel physically ill. Images will stay in your brain for years, perhaps decades, after watching.

The Ring

Easily one of the most disturbing horror movies, it’s scary element is that it is so blasé for so much of the movie before getting to the point. You don’t know what’s going on, but it is elementally freaky for quite some time. It can get a bit cheesy, but this one did quite a few people in when it first arrived in theaters.

Pulp Fiction

A confusing if glorious collection of random scenes and symbolic elements told out of sequence. The movie is a cult classic, but will make you wonder more than a few times if you really understood all that. Having someone to ask will make it all a bit easier to understand, although you might have to watch it a few times to really grasp all the deeper meanings.

A Clockwork Orange

Based on the book of the same name, the ultra violence of children is showcased in a way that will make you wonder what in the world you were thinking. Highly controversial, the violence in the movie is a statement on the future of society when our casual violence takes over completely.

Se7en

A serial killer is creating the seven deadly sins. Graphic, gruesome and totally chilling, this one isn’t horror, it isn’t drama, and it’s just damn freaky. There are some powerfully acted scenes in this one making it especially obsessive.

The Accused

A woman with a bad past is gang raped in a bar under the encouraging cheers of other men present. When her rapists receive only a light sentence under a plea deal, she convincers her lawyer to go after the men that egged the rape on from the sidelines. Graphic and disturbing in a very real-world sort of way.
