First of all I'd like to make it clear that if Iran was allowed to develop its nuclear programme I believe its missiles could only cover a distance of 1500 miles. However, within that range lies the state of Israel who also has a bit of an arsenal. Since Palestine was dissolved after world war 2, arabs have been living in the state of Israel that is dominated by Jewish peoples and has caused tensions since. Mr.Ariel kindly withdrew Israeli troops and peoples from the West Bank I believe back in 2005, but it is almost a simmering pot with the arabs in the West Bank and Gaza strip. Another Nuclear power in the Middle East region in the form of Iran would certainly pose potential problems. Israeli businessmen have even been persecuted with trading with Iranians, Iran has severed all diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel labelling them the Zionist regime. Some would say that allowing Iran to develop its weapons is just allowing potential full scale violence between the 2 states.
However, a similiar situation between 2 rival powers with trouble brewing on a larger scale would be the cold war period between USA and the Soviet Union. Neither country used nuclear weapons due to the fact that mutually assured destruction would occur. Whats the point in using nuclear weapons if your only going to have them fired upon ones self? Iran and Israel would check eachother, assuring no violence would occur, although tensions existed in the cold war, no large scale violent activity took place.
