An unknown person has been covering a US town in brightly coloured wool.

The rogue craftsman - dubbed 'The Midnight Knitter' by residents of West Cape May in New Jersey - has been covering tree branches and lamp posts with little sweaters of brightly coloured wool on a nightly basis.

Town Mayor Pam Kaithern said: "We don't know who it is. Technically, they shouldn't be doing it. The police are asking about it, but it's fun and it's a mystery."

The knitter has even set up their own website, a Facebook and a MySpace page where they describe themselves as "knitters that got sick of knitting kitten mittens."
